That's true, but they are easy to find. The American Society of Indexers
web site (http://www.asindexing.org) has instructions for getting a copy of
"Indexer Locator", a directory of indexers in the US and their specialties.
The ASI web site also has links to ASI chapter sites (some of which have
online directories of indexers) and links to indexers' organizations in
other countries (through which you can find an indexer outside the US).
The indexer doesn't have to be near your site. Most back-of-the-book
indexers and many database indexers never meet their clients.
You send the indexer page proofs or files. The indexer sends you a file
containing the index in the format of your choice.
