I'm not familiar with the templates to which you refer, however, Word cannot
make a cross-reference between two separate documents. The only time this
works is when the documents are subdocuments in a master document, and the
cross-reference appears only in the master document itself.
If you open a subdocument outside of the master document context, the
cross-references become error messages.
