TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
I also joined the Emerging Technologies SIG and heard nary a peep. The
following year I voted with my dollars and did not sign up for the Emergin
Technologies SIG again. I did join the Online, Information Design, and
Usability SIGs. I think the $5 for each doesn't even cover the volunteer
efforts to produce the newsletters and web sites. If I want more I should
volunteer some of my own time the SIGs. In many cases you get out of a SIG
what you put in to it.

Subject: RE: STC SIGs - scam or resource?
When I joined the STC a little over a year ago, I checked off the Emerging
Technologies SIG on the application and added $5 to my fee. I was
surprised that I never received any information from this SIG and that I
never saw anything about its meetings or activities in the STC mailings.
To my knowledge, it doesn't exist.
