TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
The second person is already addressed directly in any instruction phrased
within the imperative mood; the pronoun "you" is omitted, but understood.
So, if "Click OK" is acceptable, "You cannot delete this" must also be.
If a reader thinks that the manual is addressing him directly ("You in the
red shirt! Bill! Bill Higgins! Yes, I'm talking to you! HEY!! YOU CAN'T
DELETE THIS!!! HAW HAW HAW HAW!!!"), there may be issues to be addressed
that are, shall we say, beyond the scope of technical communication.
