A simple solution might be to hide the number when you print the
documentation for customers, for instance by turning it into conditional
text (in Framemaker) or using the Hide text feature (in Word).
Another solution might be to include a list of figures and mention the
number there. In this way, the customer is not distracted when reading the
body of your documentation, and people who do need the number have fast
access to it through the list.
The first thing is what our Training department does with the revision
history of their material: they'll include a date and additional information
on the electronic page, but won't make them visible on the printed page.
