Thanks to all of you who responded. I've been keeping track and you are
nearly split down the middle. Many of you cited pages in style guides;
others talked about how "a historical ..." could be misinterpreted as
meaning "an absence of history."
I did a lot of laughing--you all had a great sense of humor about this
topic. In the final analysis, even though there are "rules" for the using
"a" or "an," convention seems to say go with what feels most
comfortable--especially depending on what side of the pond you're on.
