I, too, was supervised by a QA manager in a job I had not too long ago. I used to report to the chief engineer, but he got too busy and pawned me off to the QA department.

The QA manager had very poor organizational and language skills but, unlike Lynn's boss, he left me alone. So alone, in fact, that by default I had to perform many of his functions including setting up the company's entire ISO program and document control department (you'd instantly recognize the name of this top-5 defense contractor if I mentioned it).

He was bright enough to take full credit for our successful first ISO audit when the time came, however.

I left that job after a while, and last time I heard about this manager was a story about him and a 9MM pistol and the lunchroom, or something.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I worked for a QA manager at my last job and it was HELL. She was
constantly trying to rope me into testing software when she refused to do
so herself, and she understood diddlysquat about tech writing. For
example, she complained when I insisted on putting together an outline for
a book I was going to write. "What do you need an outline for? Aren't you
senior enough that you know how to write a book without an outline?"

Glad to be out of there,

--Lynn
