It seems to me that your best bet would be to electronically sign the
document, or each important part of it. That is, run the "sensitive"
material through PGP or something similar to calculate a one-way code from
the material. At any point, you can check the signature against the
sensitive section; if even one space character has changed, the code won't
match, and the signature will fail.

This is only useful if your need is not really to "write-protect" a section,
but rather to make sure you know if a section has been tampered with, and
reject it if so.
