Scottie Lover,

The situation you described about the department store is a no-win situation no
matter what you do. You cannot produce quality in a non-quality atmosphere. You
can enhance your reputation in this environment either. Even if somehow you
manage to produce a superior product in this atmosphere, all of your peers will
probably badmouth you to protect themselves from anything that you might say
about them.

So my advice would be to get out. IMO, there are more than enough battles to
fight trying to produce a top quality product without trying to work in this
hotbed of politics and self-interest.
