There's an interesting study described at
http://www.stanford.edu/dept/news/report/news/may10/eyetrack-55-a.html
in which they make the point that people read text first when reading online
news and graphics second. It has some interesting implications for those of us
who create online material as part of the technical material destined for
users.

The study used headsets that followed eye movements of the subjects as they
scanned the online material.
