The method John describes is how Word is designed to work. However, there is
an obscure bug that can be quite annoying. If you use the Heading styles with
automatic numbering, checking the Automatically update styles option corrupts
the styles in the document. The corruption is most obvious if you use change
tracking, but also shows itself by changing the tab and indent settings of
some styles. For more information, in the Microsoft Knowledge base, see
article number Q228446. This applies at least to Word 97, but I don't believe
it is fixed in Word 2000. I recommend avoiding the Automatically update
styles option.
