Well, if you have to...but I don't have to like it ;}

Well, uh, no...If you've been naming them this way all
along, why count. Your image directory will have the
images in order (or you can put them in order) so that
you'll be able to see them easily.

This particular convention, by the way, is based on
the convention for presenting images in textbooks, et
cetera.

I didn't say I liked it...To me, this way of naming
things is as descriptive as "Image1.gif"

This is what I usually do. If I

I think that this is a good way of doing it. I would
add the caution, however, to check with your printer
to see how they prefer the images be named (they may
think it's easier to keep up with the images in
numerical format).

Agreed. I violated my own rule above, didn't I.
Computers and the Internet has changed a lot of
things, haven't they?

I guess the bottom line is to take into consideration
all aspects of the situation. You might ask yourself:

-Will the document be printed? What are the printer's
requirements?
-Will it go online? What is the server's platform?
-Will others be editing it? If so, can they figure out
the system?
-Are the documents modular? Static? How often do they
undergo a major revision?
-Will anyone else handle the images?
-Does it really matter in the grand scheme of things?
