Shweta G Bhatia wants to make Word docs read-only.
Protecting the document will prevent the user
from making changes to this document:

Use Tools->Protect Documents. Click Forms.
If the document has sections, click the Sections
button and select all of them.
Be sure to enter a password.

When the user opens the document he will not
be to do anything in the document.
This is probably not fool-proof---there are always
ways to get around security!

When you want to edit the document, use
Tools->Unprotect Document, and enter
the password.
