In my current job (which is my first tech writing job), I had to complete a
four week trial period, where I had to work on 'real' projects but at the
same time, it was a (really thorough) test of my abilityand they could judge
how I fitted in with the other employees. If they didn't like
anything...they could have just said at the end of the trial period.
Admittedly, if there were many potential employees, they couldn't do this
but I consider myself really lucky to have been offered the trial period, as
it was the only way I could 'prove' myself because I'd never actually done
the job before...
