RE: In Reference to Drug Testing
"Do you smoke dope" Gee, if the company is producing a manual on how to
service and maintain airplanes and you're responsible for writing a manual
that would tell someone how to incorrectly service that said airplane,
perhaps you being stoned and giving out information to a potential user who
might then inadvertently follow your written instructions and thereby cause
a catastrophic result.
You're missing one important piece of any question here: Does the employee smoke dope (or any of these other things that affect alertness or clarity of mind) WHILE ON THE JOB. When did we, especially the wordsmiths on this list, starting saying that "use" and "abuse" have the same definition? If someone's stoned or has any other kind of mental impairment (such as exhaustion) on the job, send them home, or fire them if it's chronic. What they do privately in off-hours doesn't automatically affect safety or anything else about working hours.
A person who is very, very tired (say, who stays up all night because of a crying baby) is about as impaired as a drunk or stoned individual, I'm sorry to say. Driving studies have proven that. Should we test prospective employees for children?
Any company with sensitive mechanical equipment or dangerous procedures should monitor their employees for signs of fatigue or other impairments... and those who don't should get their butts sued when (not if) people get hurt. As I've said before, drug tests are the lazy, complacent way to avoid keeping track of your employees and their performance.
*And* they're an invasion of off-hour privacy.
