Aren't there deeply discounted opportunities to buy software as students? I
know I took advantage of that in school...

If you have upgraded to the latest version of a piece of software, I don't
believe it is legal to distribute the old version, so the only legal thing
to do is throw it in the trash can or as some geeks (e.g. me) do, keep it as
a memento...
