To the best of my knowledge, this is NOT an illegal practise. In the past 10
years, I've always been asked to show proof of citizenship and I'm native-born
and caucasian.

It costs a company a significant amount of money to sponsor someone for
citizenship and many do not have the means to do so.

If you're looking for jobs through the job boards, many companies indicate
whether or not they will sponsor a candidate.
