Problem with Word 97 page number placement

I'm trying to place the page numbers in my word document (about 175 pages
with 3 sections) on the outside corners of the footer. I had no problem
getting the pages to number correctly for each section, but the each time I
set the page numbers to place on the outside, when I look at the document
after my attempt to change their placement, they're still down in the right
corner. I asked a coworker for help, and after a number of choice mumbled
comments about Word she did get the page numbers to place in the center of
the foote, but I'm hoping I can still find a way to convince them to shift
to the outside corners.
