Yaacov Garber <ygarber -at- e-and-c -dot- com> is unimpressed with the prospect of
switching to Lotus Notes and wants to collect war stories. My company uses
Lotus Notes (4.6.2), and I have about six years of experience with it.

Notes is really a database product that includes e-mail. For the purpose you
describe (tracking and threading product development documentation), Notes is
excellent. It has capabilities, and there exist plug-ins, for storing,
cataloging, tracking, and maintaining specs, bug reports, customer requests,
internal discussions, phone lists--you name it.

As an e-mail tool it's perfectly adequate, but I wouldn't say it's optimized
for that function. It can be extremely quirky, in fact. UI designers have
excoriated its mail interface. (There's a whole wing of the User Interface
Hall of Shame devoted to Notes; you can find it on the Web if you're so
inclined.)

On the other hand, I know of no viruses written for Notes. Switching from
Outlook means never having to rebuild your hard disk again. On the whole, I
am happy with Notes.
