TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
And to all of you who are poised at the Reply button
ready to pounce all over this, I'M JOKING!
Seriously, adopt a convention and stick with it. We
tend to focus on the mundane so much on this list. Who
cares if the book says "Click OK" or "Press OK"? As
long as whatever you choose to use is consistent
through your document, the user will get what you
mean.
No matter how you tell someone to do something,
someone somewhere will disagree with the way you told
them to do it. Maybe they prefer "Pop" to "Click"
because their mouse button sounds more like a pop when
pressed. Maybe they don't use a mouse at all, in which
case click doesn't work for them. Or maybe they're on
a voice recognition system, in which "click", "press",
"push", "pop", and all other tangible references don't
apply...
Just pick one and move on. Your deadline will thank you.
