I actually worked at one place where they announced one Monday afternoon
that the dress code would go from casual to "business casual" the next
morning, any one wearing jeans would be sent home, "and, oh, by the way,
guys, if you happen to see any of our customers onsite wearing jeans, please
ask them to dress better" (said customers being the U.S. government and in
town for several weeks to review our manuals).
After having to go do emergency clothes shopping the next night (after
wearing the only pair of khakis I owned at the time), I started circulating
my resume.
