Here's another take on the "atmospheric" benefits:
1. Many companies are including onsite health clubs or exercise rooms in new
construction or remodeling projects
2. Many companies are offering partially subsidized on-site day care.
3. Many companies are offering on-site cafeterias
4. Many companies are following the Japanese tradition of offering "personal
rest areas" where you can catch a 30-minute cat nap...
Are these atmospheric perks? Not quite...On the surface, they appear to be
conveniences and maybe even cost-effective ones at that. Nope, it's all
designed to keep you on the job longer during the day.
Sames goes for casual dress...you can work longer hours in comfortable
clothes (t-shirt and jeans is the norm in lots of companies here in Austin)
Free tea, coffee, and sodas...heck, everybody (or nearly so) is doing that.
40-hour work week...since when? Unless you're a contractor that needs
advance approval for any "overtime" (which is paid at straight time), you
probably can't remember when you've seen your last 40-hour work week. Having
spent 18 months in an eCommerce environment, I never worked fewer than 45
hours and most of the time averaged around 50+.
The once-a-week telecommuting option? That's just so your neighbors won't
shoot you as a prowler because you live at work...they are only protecting
their investment in you. Check the stats...I think you'll find that people
who work from home generally put in more than an 8-hour day...
And finally....as you've probably figured out by now...there is no FREE
LUNCH....; )
