Well, it doesn't take any great physical strength or prowness to get into
the military. That's historically been a place for po'folks to go- and, if a
person has some initiative, they can pursue training and/or higher
education...
Travel - the military is also a way to get travel abroad- in any case, it's
still quite possible to travel without learning much about the places....
Education- yes, there are sharp, well-read people without higher education,
as there are educated louts..

And, some folks really do have obstacles preventing them from getting ahead.
But, IMNSHO, most people who don't do well didn't pay attention when they
should have, or made excuses instead of getting the work done!
(uh, oh- where's my Nomex?)
