Gee Mike, I don't remember you from back then... ;) I agree with your
remarks. I mangled the heck out of language back then (some would say
things haven't changed!), but still went on to earn 3 degrees, two of them
in English.

(and to bring the thread back to its starting point, I grew up in the rural
south--southern Alberta Canada--and I can usually make change on the first
attempt ;)

This (and the rest of this thread) is hardly a portent of doom when this
generation grows up. I knew a (then) girl who spoke the exact same way,
"he goes, she goes," back in the late 70s, and who endured much
harassment for it from her elders. She grew up to use language just fine,
and is now a professional writer of excellent quality.
