My experience is almost exactly the same except for the six months of
boilerplate revision. I came from an unrelated field, this position was
suggested to me, I knew I had the tools, so I jumped. I also landed in
the right place with a mentoring senior writer and a company that
spends a lot on training. In less than two months I feel like I'm up to
speed on the tools, most of the subject matter, and the position as it
relates to the company. (More powerful than I would have guessed.)
Much depends on the motivation of the individual.

I did exactly that. I had six months experience revising boilerplates
and
fancied myself a tech writer. A friend of mine once commented, "There
is great
confidence in ignorance." He's right. I had nothing but unwarranted
confidence,
and the great good fortune to be in the right time, the right place,
have a
senior writer on the project willing to mentor me, and a God-given gift
for
doing this.
