My first computer use was on a PDP/11 in 1975, and I wrote my first "BASIC"
program on that computer in 1976. But somehow, even 'though I wanted to be a
writer at the time, it never occurred to me that there was a career called
"technical writing" until 1989 when I met some technical writers. The rest
is history :-)

On the other thread where someone mentioned that software and computers
crashing are not really dangerous, because they are only simulations: there
are plenty of examples where hardware is being controlled by software - not
just robots, but cars, planes, microwaves, etc. all have computers in them.

And to back off a level, there are plenty of situations where people are
using computer software in making decisions, where wrong decisions can cost
lives (e.g., air traffic controllers, people using medical software in
hospitals, etc.).

One of the reasons I moved to my current job was that I was (and still am)
really excited about working for a company whose software helps improve
safety in hospitals. Certainly, I am not experiencing the thrill of walking
the NYC subway tracks while trains are operating, but this "simulation" I am
documenting can have very real consequences.
