TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
Here is one more suggestion, if you have Visio or another illustration
program where you can import a bitmap as a background.
There is a site called terraserver (www.terraserver.com I believe). You can
enter just about any geographical location and it will show you a USGS
aerial photo of the area. You can zoom in or out to whatever level of
detail you want (as close as 2 meters per pixel or as far away as some
hundreds of meters per pixel). Anyway, you can download the image as a
bitmap. Place the bitmap in the background and trace over some of the main
highways and whatever local streets are appropriate. Highlight a
recommended route. Make sure you clearly mark relevant locations. Hide the
background image. You'll have a map, drawn to scale with only the necessary
information. If you feel it is worth the time to do it carefully, you'll
find the results are far better than what you'll get from any of the
driving direction sites in terms of clarity.
Of course, this all assumes whoever doing this has the ability to decipher
the aerial photo. I've seen people who just don't "get it" from the
overhead perspective.
