I see this sort of remark come up on the list, and it always puzzles me. It
seems to me that those who take this point of view just don't "get it."
They're missing one of the essential functions of this list.

Yes, the list can supply information and settle(?) questions. But there's
another function this list serves.

It gives us an outlet. People of similar skills and experience to our own
populate this list, and we can come to them and cry, or rant, and they will
both pat us on the shoulder with a "there, there" (which we all need from
time to time) and give us the perspective ("you think *you* got it bad, let
me tell you...." or "wadya complainin' about, ya candy-") we need to go
back and face our world.

Strangers are (or should be) courteous to each other. Though it might be
argued that few folks are stranger than the ones on this list ("them's
queer folk in techwr-land") I'm not here (and a lot of the rest of us
would, I'm sure, say the same thing) to be part of a collection of
strangers. I can have that anywhere. This should be more than a collection
of strangers. If I gotta put on my company manners, sunday-go-to-meetin
clothes and refrain from scratchin where it itches jest to be in your
exalted presence, I'm outta here.

Families support each other; families are rough on each other. I wouldn't
want to be part of a family that wasn't both of those things. If your
sister can't whack you upside the head and tell you to get over yourself,
who can?

Yes, that means sometimes I'll get a slap in the face when I want a pat on
the shoulder, but that's life. Sometimes I *need* the slap, even if I don't
want it; sometimes it's even a few days (weeks) later before I realize it.
*I'm* the one that's the best judge of that; the rest of you are not, and I
resent the dickens out it when any of you set yourself up as judge. I don't
want and don't need any of the rest of you making ill-informed judgements
about someone based on their reaction to me. You may think what they said
was unforgivable; *I* may think it was just what I needed or deserved.

So go ahead, decide on someone's worth simply because you've seen them
acting out here, where no one's getting paid to contribute or even just get
along with their clients and co-workers. (co-listers?) All you're proving
is you utterly lack an understanding both of this list in particular, and
of humanity in general.

Which only proves I (for one) wouldn't want to work for (with) you, anyway.
