Then, again, there a number of us of a certain age who remember when dialogue
and catalogue, amongst many others, were always so spelt. I think, in this case,
it was not good ol' Webster who wrought the change, but the University of
Chicago in the 1930 in their effort to "simplify" the orthography of English.
Yes, the same folk who came up with thru for through and the ilk! George Bernard
Shaw in England was attempting something similar about the same time. Obviously,
it only partially took in the U.S., and not at all in the rest of the
Englilsh-speaking world.
