TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
I'm a "newbie" who usually lurks, responding off list to questions in my
budding areas of expertise in medical writing and web site design. This
particular thread has some personal meaning to me so I'm out of the closet.
I agree with Eric and the anonymous writer that lately some comments are
condescending and downright cruel on this site.
One of my professors at Northeastern University highly recommended joining
this list as a great opportunity to learn from seasoned professionals. And
ask questions. I found the recent discussion about "doing someone's
classwork" after a student's query concerning technical writing,
disheartening. Did anyone bother to contact him "off list" to see what he
might need or what sort of paper he was doing? Plenty was said about him
"on list". Much of it was unkind and intimidating. I don't believe he's
posted anything lately. I'd be willing to bet he was frightened off.
BTW, students do have pretty thick "skins", not as tough as yours quite
yet. My personal experience as a "mature" newbie confirms this! We can and
do take criticism and comments just like some of you seasoned
professionals, but unfortunately not all. Just give us a little time and
patience. Most of us do try not to ask stupid questions. There are those
like me in the midst of changing careers, juggling jobs we already have,
and trying, like you to learn as much as we can about technical writing.
Weren't all the listers here students and newbies once? I think a few may
have forgotten.
I recently debated about unsubscribing but decided to stay on to see what
transpires after the thread ends. This list offers invaluable information
from the majority of respondees. I often copy and paste links or use advice
from some of the gurus I have grown to greatly admire and respect.
And the others? Lately I just need to take a look at the responding name
and use my delete key. I hope things change.
