To my mind the bit about getting involved in spec and code reviews is essential
when working in some environments. Most dev groups I've worked with hold weekly
status meetings and I've always made a point of getting invited to these,
usually when I'm documenting a brand new product. These are often a forum where
changes to code and functionality is discussed amongst the developers and their
manager(s) and it's a useful way of finding out upfront what changes are coming
down the pipes.
