There was a tip posted to this listserv a while back, regarding using Word's
"Save As" instead of merely "Save." I have checked the archives and cannot
find the original reference. I have been dutifully using "Save As" but I
would like to know what specific evils I am avoiding by doing so.

One of the specific evils you get to avoid here is the huge file size
problem. Doing a Save As brings all the document's bits together on the disk
(at least, it used to, not sure about Word 2000). This can be a problem
especially when using AutoSave, since autosave creates bunches and bunches
of versions of the doc you're working on (you can see them all in the
directory you're working in). I don't know why, but that apparently impacts
the contiguosity (not an actual word) of the file.
That's why I use Save As every once in a while.
