I gotta go with Andrew on this one.  The most successful writers I've 
worked with have come from strong technical backgrounds or at least been 
"of a technical mind."

Forced to choose between extremes, I'd still rather help a good writer 
become more technical than teach a technical expert grammar.  But the 
good writer definitely needs to learn as much as possible about the 
subject matter; otherwise, he or she is just a data-entry and paste-up 
clerk.
