We are in the process of completely revising our online help system, and are
at a turning point between RoboHTML and RoboHelp for WinHelp(no, please
don't tell me how wonderful Forehelp or DocToHelp are; we have the RoboHelp
licenses).
I'm pushing for RoboHTML; the RoboHelp files are getting LARGE, and
difficult to handle (we use a lot of math, which means a lot of embedded
graphics, which means that the potential for corruption is always with us),
and HTML seems to be the direction that help systems are going in. Besides,
from a re-use standpoint, it's pretty easy to turn a RoboHTML topic into an
FAQ.
But, it does require that a "silent install" (NOT hidden from customers, the
documentation says) be available as part of the install, as a portion of our
customer base is still on Windows 95, and won't be leaving any time soon.
There are management concerns, genuine I believe, with this technology
change. Are we getting ourselves into a bad place? Has anyone had experience
in this area that they'd be willing to share?
