As someone who possibly falls into the language-purists camp, one of the
reasons I continue to use UK English spellings is because they are old. They
reflect our history and the influences that other countries have had on us
over the centuries. So what if they don't reflect 'current' pronunciation.
Personally I think the most important job of the word is to convey it's
meaning, not what it actually looks like. I am also much in favour of
American spellings as they remove some of the grey/gray areas around
spelling, which makes it easier for us all.
Otherwise we should use the spelling's we prefer, there's no need to impose
a particular line on this. If left to it's own devices, the language will
sort itself out through the preferences of its users.

The giver should be thankful.

Many British scientists and engineers now publish using
US spellings, in order to keep in step with the rest of
the world.

As well, in reaction to the UK language-purists, there's a
counter-movement afoot to discredit and mothball many of the
arcane UK spellings, since they do not reflect current
pronunciation,
and have not done so for years... centuries in many cases.
