Fowler's Modern English Usage says (and I'm excerpting):

"... that farther is not common except where distance is in question, and
that further has gained a virtual monopoly in the sense of moreover, both
alone and in the compund furthermore."

OTOH, Fowler's was first published in 1926 (by Oxford University Press) and
only revised in 1965. The niceties of usage may have changed (what hasn't?)
since then.
