Has education really changed over the years? From as far back as I can remember it has been tinkered with as new theories of learning etc have surfaced and disappeared again. The two main differences I see (and it appears to be reflected in the US) are:

1 Teaching isn't valued as it once was and you can get a lot more money in other jobs

2 There's more to teach - when I was at school we were taught calculus from first principles once and then we just used it. Not done any more, no time. One teacher told me he's not education children now, simply training them to pass exams!

To get back on target (at least a little!) isn't the durfeit of information where we come into our own (in all the various incarnations of TWing)? We, hopefully, make the right information needed available to people when it's needed. Often, however, the need is to show how to use it, not how it works. As thing become more complicated, more information is needed or it must be so simple that the information isn't needed. Look at computer set-up - we're
the plug 'n' play generation and a lot (most?) of people don't know what's going on, just that it works. Does this mean that we are on the road to a two-tier society with the technocrat and the multitudes with TWers providing the user interface?! People DO still tinker and want to know how things work but are they allowed to? Look at the modern car - what can we do with it except check the oil/water etc? If a light goes it's into the garage for a new
light unit not a new bulb. Heating not working, that the on-board computer - needs a new chip etc. Anyway, enough rambling there's work to be done.
