Word Styles & page breaks

Greetings.

I've searched the archives for the answer to my problem, but to no avail.

I'm using Word 2000.  For some reason when the first style I apply on a page
after inserting a page break is being used by the page break itself.  For
instance, I insert a page break, then have a Heading 1 of the subject
"Testing".  When I generate the table of contents, the heading "Testing" is
listed for both page 1 and 2.  By turning on invisibles, I can see that the
style has been applied to the page break, but if I try to set it back to
Normal, my heading on the next page also changes to Normal.  

Any illumination would be greatly appreciated.
