But you *do* pay to attend. And that money should be shared with those who
are bringing their expertise at the express request of the organizers of
the event.

It's defensible, though a little lame, to ask people to come share their
professional expertise with your paying audience without remuneration. It's
tacky beyond the bounds of civilised conduct to demand that *they* pay
*you* for the privilege of doing so.

At least that was my reading of the note that started this thread.
