I remember hearing--about 12 years ago, at IBM, which was then undergoing a big
push for language that would be more easily translated--that "appears" could
have that magical meaning...
....if incorrectly translated into chinese.

I think it's more of an urban myth than anything else.

As for me, I prefer to stick with "opens/closes."
