TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
I spent about 2 1/2 years writing manuals for a line of trucks for the U.S.
Army. I worked primarily on the troubleshooting, which was the heart of the
books, and I had very little previous experience doing auto work (nothing
more complex than changing the power steering pump and a little light
rewiring). By the time I left, however, I could have probably drawn the
electrical schematic (20 pages!) from memory.
I don't know how much that experience has in common with civilian auto
manufacturers.
