I have a fond (and possibly inaccurate) remembrance of a time when personal
responsibility was more common. Back when it was reasonable to expect that
your audience would have an average IQ and exercise a modicum of caution.

"Danger - this cup contains coffee that is hot."
"Do not use hairdryer while in the bathtub."
"Caution - touching hot lamp may cause burns."
<end snip>

I too look back fondly upon a time when personal responsibility was common. Back
when our product legal group was only 3 people, instead of the 20+ people it is
now. It sometimes seems the Owner's Manuals we produce contain more cautions and
warnings then instructions! We have no choice. If an injury could occur, no
matter how unlikely, we HAVE to cover it, or we could be found liable in a
lawsuit. It's corporate CYA. And it will only keep getting worse as long as
corporations are viewed as the enemy with deep pockets.
