Geesh you guys are so helpful! And so quick! I really, truly appreciate the
1/2 dozen people who took time out of their days to immediately help me
(and the level of help is amazing--people offering to walk me through dos,
emailing me utilities, and responding like below. God you guys are the
best!!! To paraphrase a beer commercial, "I love you, man".) =^)
I ended up using a slick little utility called File Grabber (thanks Bill!)

(I just tried an old UNIX trick and voila -- it worked)
The short answer: "dir > files.txt"
The long answer: (with details)
1. open a DOS prompt
2. change into the directory ("cd <directory>")
3. type "dir > files.txt"
4. run Excel and open "files.txt"
5. muck around in the file to get rid of the extra stuff you don't want
