Think of the question as more "Why are you applying for this job instead of
the 20 other tech. writing jobs advertised?"

Usually there's something about the job or the company that appeals to you.
It could be something that's different about the job/company - or it could
be that it's more of the same type of work that you have enjoyed in the past
(or that you find you do well at, whatever).

By the way, I hate the "5 year" question, too.
