Yes, I had that problem yesterday. I finally began to understand when I noticed that the entire space behind the figure came up as caption. I made it body text and the problem is now under control.

Hi Genevieve,

Caveat: I don't use Word2000, so this advice (which is based on a similiar

wrong!

At a guess, I would say the problem is that the image has been formatted as
if it were part of the caption. The solution is (hopefully!) simple: go to
Tools | Options and switch on non-printing characters. Check that there is
an end-of-paragraph marker, not a simple line break, between the caption and
the image. If the end-of-paragraph mark is there, highlight the image by
itself, and select another format (your standard paragraph formatting is
usually appropriate).

If there is a line-break marker instead of a paragraph marker at the end of
the caption, you need to replace the one with the other. If you use a
line-break character, the text on either side of the line break will usually
have the same formatting - Word 'expects' that.

HTH!
