[Aphorisms] can serve as compasses when under the stress of a project.
I like them myself. Here are a couple of good ones:
- Three data points make a trend.
- All analogies are lies. <== I keep this one in mind because I use a lot of analogies in explaining unfamiliar concepts. If you let the analogies run away with you, the user gets a false impression and you yourself can also start mistaking the elements of the analogy for the elements of the system. Extrapolating about a system from an analogy about it brings about confusion faster than anything else. This is really a subset of "All information is incomplete." Information is to what's really going on as a GUI is to file systems and code (or silicon and electricity if you really want to get basic).
