I finally decided to consider the Yale Style Manual
(http://info.med.yale.edu/caim/manual/contents.html) the authority on the
subject. They use "Web site" throughout their site. I'll admit I still
prefer to write web site or website, but Yale probably pulls a _little_ more
weight than I do.
Why? I mean, why do you consider it an authority?
Their so-called "Web Style Guide" is an attempt to make working for a new
medium feel like working for print, and they place such heavy emphasis on
making web pages printer-friendly that they sacrifice
screen-friendliness. Altho' I'm not sure that specifying Times New Roman
as the first font choice even qualifies as print-friendly.
The best thing about the Yale Style Manual is its bibliography. I wouldn't
rely on it as a sole or final arbiter for anything.
