I don't remember if anyone has mentioned this book yet.

For a good introduction to a similar issue (website usability), try Steve Krug's "Don't make me think: a common sense approach to Web usability," Que, 2000, ISBN 0789723107.

I was most impressed by this short book's clear statement of the issues and the examples of typical Web sites; the author invites the reader to identify what's wrong with them and how to fix them, and follows up by suggesting one or several variations.
