I was a member of the IEEE Professional Communication Society several years
ago, and presented at many of their annual conferences. They don't get the
attendance that STC has--usually between 150 to 250 people. Lots of STC
folks have dual membership with IEEE PCS. The content of the PCS journal and
conference papers tends to be more focused and addresses the more
senior-level communications professionals.
>From my perspective, I think the STC overall is taking on the
characteristics of a mutual admiration society and they seem to regurgitate
the same topics but with different titles; much less so with IEEE PCS. I'm
of the opinion that I can get more value by joining other IEEE factions and
ACM SIGs as well, like SIG-CHI or SIG-DOCs.
I also believe that this list has more value to offer across the
spectrum...from doing battle in the trenches to watching the battle from the
hilltop. The perspectives are 360 degrees and provide much food for thought.
