I have a vivid memory from my NASA tech editor days: using a black felt-tip pen to color in the o's being used in bulleted lists (see example above, courtesy Teri) on a space shuttle malfunction recovery flowchart. Sitting in a break room doing this, listening to the Coke machine hum, because I hadn't gotten my security clearance yet and something secure was going on over in the office.

o Light tables ...

If you've had a job fixing pasted up masters this way, you can spot it when you see it in the final printed product--slight inconsistencies in alignment or apparent font weight.
